Terms and Conditions of Use
Last Revised: June 2, 2026
Welcome to the American Jewish Population Project (AJPP), hosted by the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies and the Steinhardt Social Research Institute at Brandeis University.
By accessing, browsing, or registering for this website (ajpp.brandeis.edu), you ("User") agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions of Use. If you do not agree to these terms, you must immediately cease using the website, its data, and its applications.
1. Scope of Agreement and Site-Wide Application
These Terms apply to all visitors, users, and registered accounts who access the AJPP website, its interactive mapping applications, population estimates, data, codebooks, videos, reports, text, graphics, and technical documentation (collectively, the "Content").
2. Limited Non-Commercial License
AJPP hereby grants the User a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access, view, and download the Content solely for Permitted Non-Commercial Uses. Authorized users may not share their account credentials, passwords, or authenticated access sessions with any third party.
3. Permitted Non-Commercial Uses
Users may utilize limited, reasonable portions of AJPP data and estimates for the following activities, provided that proper citation is given:
- Academic and scientific research resulting in peer-reviewed publications or books.
- Classroom and other non-commercial educational instruction, lectures, seminars, and student assignments.
- Internal planning and educational presentations by non-profit organizations (e.g., Jewish federations, synagogues, foundations), provided no fees are charged to participants or communities for the data or resulting reports and further provided that any data shared with audience members is constrained to visual displays and static physical or PDF handouts, and not distributed as raw data tables or transferable data arrays.
- News organizations and journalists for reference, quote, or reproduction of content for news reporting, with attribution to the American Jewish Population Project at Brandeis University, and for online publications a hyperlink to ajpp.brandeis.edu.
- Personal, non-commercial research or library deposits of dissertations.
4. Commercial Use and Collaborative Partnerships
AJPP actively encourages the application of our demographic models for broader community initiatives, planning programs, and consulting frameworks. However, to ensure the scientific integrity of the research and support the ongoing financial sustainability of the project, any commercial, revenue-generating, or fee-for-service utilization of AJPP data requires prior written permission and a formal licensing or cooperative agreement. These mutually beneficial agreements may involve data access fees, cost-sharing, or project funding to support future computational updates to our population estimates. Prohibited commercial uses include, but are not limited to:
- Incorporating AJPP Content into proprietary market research, demographic consulting profiles, or community assessment reports that are funded via client fee, subscription models, or administrative community assessments.
- Utilizing AJPP estimates as the basis for commercial fundraising consulting, political campaigns, or real estate development analytics.
- Redistributing AJPP data within an unrestricted commercial database, API, or software application.
Seeking a Commercial or Collaborative License?
If your organization wishes to utilize AJPP data for broader community applications, collaborative research, or fee-supported programs, you must establish a formal partnership or licensing agreement. Please contact the project administration at ajpp@brandeis.edu.
5. Intellectual Property and Data Integrity
- Attribution & Citation: Any permitted use of AJPP data, graphics, or estimates must be explicitly cited and sourced to the American Jewish Population Project at Brandeis University, conforming to standard academic practices.
- Recommended Citations:
- For estimates retrieved from map: Jewish Population in the United States 2020 [Map]. American Jewish Population Project at Brandeis University. ajpp.brandeis.edu/map. Accessed [Date].

- Prohibition on Misrepresentation: Users may not alter, manipulate, or misrepresent AJPP estimates. Presenting historical or specific temporal estimates (e.g., 2020 estimates) as current, real-time population data without explicit methodological disclosure is a violation of these Terms.
6. Data Extraction and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policies
- Restrictions on Automatic Extractions: Automated mechanisms—including web robots, spiders, crawlers, scrapers, or scripts—designed to bulk-download, harvest, or extract data arrays, population estimates, or mapping layers from AJPP are strictly prohibited.
- Restrictions on AI Training: Users and automated systems are strictly prohibited from using any Content, data points, or model architectures from this website to train, fine-tune, test, or validate machine learning models, large language models (LLMs), or artificial intelligence systems.
7. Security and Account Termination
Users are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their login credentials. AJPP reserves the right, in its sole discretion and without prior notice, to terminate or restrict access to any account or IP address suspected of violating these Terms, causing excessive server burden, or engaging in unauthorized data distribution.
Upon expiration or termination of the User’s access for any reason, the license granted herein is immediately revoked. The User must immediately cease all use of AJPP Content and permanently delete or destroy all electronic and physical copies of raw data extracts, population estimates, or model outputs in their possession
8. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability
AJPP provides demographic estimates derived from complex statistical modeling. While we strive for methodological excellence, AJPP data is provided "as-is." Brandeis University and the AJPP research team disclaim all warranties, express or implied, and shall not be held liable for any inaccuracies, errors, omissions, or damages resulting from the interpretation or utilization of the data by third parties.
9. Governing Law
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and federal laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any legal action arising from these terms must be filed exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Massachusetts.
10. Modifications to Terms
AJPP reserves the right to modify or update these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior individual notice. The date of the latest revision will be posted at the top of this document. Your continued use of the website and Content following any updates constitutes your binding acceptance of the revised Terms.
